Everybody loves to have a reason to celebrate things, and the Brazilian people are known for celebrating anything that they can think to celebrate, and it’s a great thing that they do, for their celebrations are always extremely colorful and absolutely beautiful and enjoyable. In the United States there are very few cities that you can look to if you’re looking to have a true Brazilian party, and one of those cities is Austin, Texas, when they celebrate the Carnaval Brasileiro!

The Carnaval Brasileiro is the oldest and largest event of it’s kind in the United States. Over 5,000 people attend the Carnaval Brasileiro every year, and as more and more people learn about it, it is sure to have more and more attendance! The party is an annual celebration and festival that is held, in Brazil, 40 days before Easter. The entire country of Brazil celebrates this amazing Carnaval, which was created as a way to say farewell to all of the things that Catholics give up during lent. The name itself, Carnaval Brasileiro, means to raise meat. During this carnival, the entire country says farewell to all of the bad things that they can think of or that they’re giving up for Lent in order to prepare for Christ’s death and resurrection.

So what does this mean for someone who is celebrating Carnaval Brasileiro in Austin? First it means music. Lots and lots of music! The Brazilians are known for celebrating everything with music, the kind that gets your toes tapping and your body moving. There are always live bands and tons of Brazilian music that can be found on many streets in Austin during this celebration, and many hotels and centers arrange for bands to play at their location a year ahead of time!

The next thing you should expect is color, for the Brazilian culture is all about color. You’ll find beautiful costumes and tons of decorations, making the entire city look more colorful during the celebration.

First, do a little reconnaissance and figure out where the best place to be is. Talk to friends and family and co-workers and ask them where they’re gone to celebrate the carnival. This will give you an idea of what type of atmosphere you can expect from the places that you go to, so that you can find the right atmosphere for your personal preferences. Then speak with the people in charge of the party and book your reservation early. Spots fill up during the carnival and it can be difficult to get a spot if you don’t try to get one early enough. Finally, get a babysitter! The carnival does have some family friendly things that you can do with the entire brood, but most of the partying goes on after hours and is definitely not kid-friendly!
