Making the Most of You Time: Tips for Preparing for the Hair Salon

If you have found the right hair salon, there are few things as relaxing and soothing as visiting and thinking about nothing but your hair for the next hour or so. And when you are in the hands of a skilled and experienced stylist, you don’t even have to think about that. To make the most of every minute, it is a great idea to be prepared for your salon experience. Here are some tips that will help you do just that.

When you are going to have your hair cut or colored, it is always good to not only have an idea of what you would like, but to be able to articulate that to your hair stylist so he/she knows what you need. It is certainly fine to ask for input or advice from your stylist: in fact, this is a great way to determine if a particular look will work for you or if perhaps another would be more flattering.

Ultimately, though, it is your hair, and you need to be pleased with it. If you want something specific, make sure to describe it as best you can. Pictures are also a very helpful guide for stylists. Remember to be realistic. Your hair may not take to the latest celebrity trend, but your stylist will be able to help you find a style that will make you feel like the trendsetter.

Plan to ask your stylist what type of hair products will best help you not only create the beautiful style at home, but also maintain the health of your hair. Salon quality products, such as the luxurious Kerastase, will help you look fresh-from-the-salon everyday.

If you are visiting the salon for other services, take the time to be prepared. It will help you get the most from each appointment – and it will help you relax so you can enjoy your treatment.

Waxing is one appointment you may not enjoy, per se, but there is much you can do to prepare your skin and make it, if not pleasant, then at least less unpleasant. Make sure the hair which you want removed is at least ¼ inch long. The day before your waxing, exfoliate to remove dead skin: this will prevent ingrown hairs.

Most of the time for a facial, including microderm or Lumi Light, you just need to prepare to relax. For chemical peels, however, there are some considerations to keep in mind: nicotine can slow the healing process, so make, if you are a smoker, to limit your nicotine intake for about one month before your treatment. Your doctor may prescribe you a specific medication to prepare your skin for the treatment. You may also want to plan to take a day or two to recover; there is typically some redness and stinging after the treatment.

Going to the salon should be a pleasant experience, a treat for your body and soul. Whether you want a routine appointment for tanning or you want to make arrangements for more specialized care, such as special event makeup or bridal services, make the most of every trip to the salon: you will be rewarded with true relaxation and a beautiful feeling inside and out.
